Round-the-clock readiness: Yano Fitness Center Launches 24/7 Access

CAMP ZAMA, Japan - To boost total force readiness and physical health, the Yano Fitness Center at Camp Zama will launch 24-hour access Sept. 21, giving Soldiers, families, and civilians the flexibility to train on their own schedule.

For service members on non-standard shifts, expanded availability eliminates operational barriers.

"It really benefits those working around the clock," said Sgt. Michael Floyd, assigned to the 88th Military Police Detachment. "There are a lot of people here with unpredictable schedules, so this allows us to get after it at any time."

The initiative also delivers tactical benefits for emergency responders.

Tomonari Shimomura, firefighter assigned to USAG Japan’s Fire and Emergency Services, shared that off-peak access helps crew members maintain fitness without disturbing sleeping personnel back at the station.

"By taking turns coming here, we can leave team members ready for immediate dispatch while still getting our training in," said Shimomura.

To protect users during unstaffed hours, aquatic areas—including the pool, sauna, and jacuzzi—will remain closed, while weight rooms, cardio areas, courts, and locker rooms stay open.

Stefan Thompson, Chief, Fitness, Athletics & Aquatics here, wrapped up with a call for mutual respect,

"As a 24-hour user, please be a good steward of this awesome privilege. Practice safety, bring a spotting buddy, clean up after yourself, and keep this facility clean for everyone."
